Homemade Potpourri

Today I made some homemade potpourri out of dried pink and red rose petals that I had dried earlier this summer, along with dried lemon balm and rosemary that was grown in my herb garden. I then added a few drops of lavender essential oil, as well as a few drops of lemon essential oil. Delightful!

Between 230 and 300 this afternoon, Ellie and I were taking a walk in the front yard, and we noticed a woman approaching. She was walking along the Old Thomasville Rd., coming from town(Thomasville). She staggered out into one lane of the road, and a charcoal grey SUV honked its horn at her to move out of the road.  She stood in Penny Road for a few minutes and looked at me and Ellie, then started moving towards us. She had a small black backpack, and another black drawstring bag that looked like the kind you might carry a water bottle in. She was white, with blonde hair, and had on red shorts and a white shirt. I estimated that she was around my age(58), plus or minus 5 years.  She appeared to be either inebriated or high. She called "Hey, Lady", to me as she moved toward Ellie and me. January 21, 2025 -- The 103rd Wedding Anniversary of my Grandparents

 Today is the 103rd anniversary of the day that my grandparents were married in a small town in North Carolina. Atlas and Veda Freeman, my maternal grandparents. To me, they were Grandpa and Grandma Freeman. It is really quite amazing to stop and think about how different North Carolina (and the USA as a whole) are now from that January day in 1922. It amazes me to think of the changes that they witnessed in their lives, one born in 1892 and dying in 1982; the other born in 1898, and living until 1990.  Of course, in my own lifetime, I have seen a lot of changes happen, good and bad. It just seems to me that the ones that my grandparents saw were far greater and life-changing that those that I have seen. I suppose it depends on your perspective. I think that about my parents, as well, one of whom was born in 1937 and died in 2010; the other born in 1934 and still living.  Technically, my grandparents were married during the Roaring Twenties. Making Fire Cider

 I have been reading a lot recently about fire cider, and yesterday evening, I decided to make my own version of it. It was an ideal time, as there was a full moon last night, and a good time for such concoctions. I chose a glass jar as a container for it to ripen in, and it is now residing on my kitchen counter, along with fermenting bottles of homemade blackberry and blueberry wine. I filled the jar about half full of apple cider vinegar to begin with, then I began adding the other ingredients. Fresh key lime (whole, but cut in half), whole cloves, a cinnamon stick, a few garlic cloves. fresh ginger root, dried chives, dried parsley, dried thyme, dried rosemary, a sprig of fresh rosemary, ground nutmeg, ground allspice, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, dried lavender buds, ground tumeric, and a dried bay leaf. I shook the jar slightly, then finished filling it up with apple cider vinegar, then closed the jar. I will now allow it to ripen.
